VICTORIA Falls City Council has partnered with the National Social Security Authority (Nssa) in an effort to capacitate workers and enhance systems to prevent workplace accidents.
This is in line with need to enhance good corporate governance and best practice in service delivery as well as ensuring safety and health at the work place.
A two-day training workshop was conducted with the city’s management on Monday and Tuesday at a local hotel where Nssa occupational safety officers emphasised the need to create a conducive and safe working environment for all workers.
Council management and councillors attended the workshop. Nssa is pushing for vision zero: to make sure there is no accident or death related to work on or off the workplace.
The council was encouraged to make sure all employees, especially those working in accident-prone departments have protective clothing and get relevant training beforehand. Council management was also urged to listen to needs of employees, ensure conditions are safe and workers work prescribed hours, assess risks and come up with mitigation measures and identify potential risks in every department.
Where there is potential risk, strategies should be put in place to prevent or correct the anomalies. In her welcome remarks, the city’s chamber secretary, Ms Kholwani Mangena, who was acting town clerk said the local authority needs guidance, especially from Nssa in its drive to make sure all workstations are accident free.
She said the council strives to protect all its employees through ensuring good working conditions.
Victoria Falls Mayor, Councillor Prince Thuso Moyo, emphasised the need for good working relationship between policy makers, management and workers.
