adminSister Mary Michael, 66, who made international headlines in 2006 for protesting at the Cannes Film Festival, has applied for council permission to build the illuminated “symbol of hope” in her back garden of her home in Malvern Close, North Hykeham, Lincolnshire.
In the application she describes it as a “beacon of light” which will protect and offer ‘spiritual protection for those who see it shining in the distance’”
The structure is a “blue/white narrow cross and will not obliterate anyone’s view” but be a “symbol of ‘hope’ for everyone who sees it”.
While North Kesteven District Council is yet to make a decision on Sister Michael’s application, nearby residents have made complaints about the cross that will provide
“spiritual protection for Lincoln and Lincolnshire” according to the application.Another objector wrote on behalf of an elderly neighbour: “The size will mean that it will be an eyesore and will blight the skyline, also as it is lit up at night this will add considerably to light pollution”.
The nun made international headlines when she held a silent prayer vigil at the world premiere of box office hit The Da Vinci Code at the festival and another similar vigil outside Lincoln Cathedral where scenes from the movie were shot.A spokesman for the Nottingham Diocese said she was connected to the order, but is now a
“maverick” and a “one-woman order”. Now she is risking further controversy with her plans for the illuminated cross in the middle of a smart housing estate.—Dailymail
