A nurse at Ingutsheni Mental Hospital in Bulawayo was dragged to court after he allegedly stole $1,000 from a cashbox while on duty and used it to drink the night away at a local pub.

Gift Nyakurukwa, 32, last week admitted to stealing the money and told Bulawayo Provincial Magistrate Sibongile Msipa that he spent part of his loot on beer.

Prosecuting, Dennmore Kasenza told the court that on Tuesday last week at around 4PM Nyakurukwa stole keys for a cupboard where valuable items were kept.

“Nyakurukwa took advantage of the other nurse who was busy with the patients. He took the cashbox and went away unnoticed,’ said Kasenza.

“Nyakurukwa took $800 cash to his friend Luckymore Mandipashe for safe keeping.

“Luckmore then gave his wife Cynthia Madlangobe to keep it and the two friends went to drink beer that same day.”

Kasenza said they then collected the $800 from Mandipashe’s wife the following morning and proceeded to Kwekwe where Nyakurukwa spent the cash.

When asked what he did with the money Nyakurukwa said: “l went to drink beer with Mandipashe. I gave him the rest of the money and from what I’ve heard, he ran away to South Africa,” said Nyakurukwa.

He was remanded to today for continuation of trial.
