THE National University of Science and Technology (Nust) has introduced a chartered accountant training programme with the first intake scheduled for January 2016. The Bulawayo-based university will be a pioneer institution to offer such a programme locally. Nust has engaged South African North-West University for guidance in the running of the new course.
Officials from the two institutions met on Monday to discuss the partnership and signed a memorandum of agreement, which states that Nust will remain under the guardianship of the North-West University for a five year period.
Nust accounting department chairperson Dumisani Madzivanyati said by introducing the programme the university will ease challenges faced by students seeking to be chartered accountants.
“Chartered accounting is the highest level of accounting. At the present moment there is no local institution offering the programme.
“This will be convenient for our students. This will also make the university attain international recognition,” he said.
Madzivanyati said at the moment students were paying about R30,000 in tuition fees for the programme, which is offered in South Africa.
He called on aspiring students to register with the institution ahead of the January intake.
North-West director of accounting sciences Professor Jan Von Romburgh said they were thrilled to partner Nust saying part of their mandate was to help improve education on the continent.
“It’s important that universities speak to each other especially from an African context.
Helping and assisting each other in any way practically possibly. I think from North-West university’s perspective we want to speak to that,” said Prof Romburgh.
He said the engagement by the two institutions will assist sharing intellectual knowledge.
North West University is also assisting University of Namibia with other programmes.
