THE Southern Region Five-A-Side Soccer League kicked off on Sunday at Bulawayo Athletic Club with the National University of Science and Technology in a good start. Nust registered two successive wins over Wangu Wangu whom they beat 5-1 and Munyoro United 3-0. The league so far has 12 clubs that are registered for the Southern Region and these are Fox FC, Amabhubesi, Nust, Munyoro United, Khalanyoni, St Andrews, Ampha, FOG Stars, Wangu Wangu, Gwabalanda, and FML.
In other matches, Fox FC drew 4-4 with Amabhubesi, while Wangu Wangu beat FML 3-0.
Philani Banda, the Five-A-Side Southern Region chairman was pleased with the first round of games though other teams did not turn up.
“We are excited with the way the teams responded to the call to establish the league after years of inactivity. We started our matches last weekend with half of the teams in the league,” he said.
Banda said the door was still open for teams that want to be part of the growing sport in the city.
“We still encourage interested teams to come on board and join as we try to develop and open avenues for youths who are interested in sport,” he said, adding that five-a-side was an internationally recognised sport.
