A NYANGA good Samaritan who promised to fetch water for a local granny did the unthinkable by later raping the 73-year-old woman.
Police confirmed the rape that happened recently after the suspected rapist, Batsirai Charamba (38) of Nhamburiko Village in Chief Hata’s area, volunteered to fetch water for the woman from a borehole which is 2km away from her homestead.
“Batsirai saw the complainant going to fetch water from a borehole that was 2km away from her homestead. He then convinced the granny to go back home and promised to bring the water for her. The complainant agreed and went home.
“Batsirai proceeded to the borehole and brought the water to the granny’s homestead. He found her sitting outside her kitchen hut,” said Manicaland provincial police spokesperson Inspector Enock Chishiri.
Insp Chishiri said Batsirai persuaded her to get inside the house.
“While they were inside, he forcibly removed her clothes and raped her once. The woman took a metal basin and struck him on the head,” he said.
She made a report to the police and Batsirai was arrested.
Insp Chishiri urged young men to respect old women and not to take advantage of their vulnerability.
In an unrelated incident, a Buhera man (25) was arrested for allegedly raping a teenager (19) from the same area.
It is alleged that Peter Kubvaruno went to the complainant’s house and asked for water to drink.
“After drinking the water, he touched the complainant’s breast. She took a metal bar and hit him on the arm. This angered Peter who pulled out his catapult and hit the complainant on the back.
“She screamed running away from the kitchen. Peter ran after her demanding to be intimate with her.
“Peter caught up with her and dragged her into the bush where he raped her once,” said Insp Chishiri.
