WAR veterans in Nyanga are set to benefit from a fishery project to be established in the district next year. This was revealed during a meeting to elect the district war veterans leadership last Friday which was presided over by the interim provincial Zimbabwe National Liberations War Veterans Association chairperson, Cde Gift Kagweda.
The entire 10-member executive was elected unopposed.
Speaking during the meeting, the district chairman, Cde Teddy Chitsumba, said it was their zeal to improve their members’ welfare. “We have secured 14 fish ponds near Inn on Ruparara Hotel. Each has a holding capacity of 14 000 to 30 000 fish. We expect the fish to be on the market by next year. We are also lobbying for residential and commercial stands for war veterans from the council. The gum pole business we ventured into this year has already started paying dividends and we hope to double it next year,” he said.
The association’s vice-chairman, Cde Charles Mbiriwiri and the secretary for finance, Cde Barnabas Mhaka also echoed the same statements and said their mandate was to improve war veterans’ welfare.
Earlier elections to choose new office bearers were aborted last month due to logistical challenges, a reason that could have contributed to the poor turn-out during last week’s elections. Some of the war veterans failed to turn up for the elections citing lack of bus fares.
