SHE might be turning 38, but Correctional Queens striker Marjory Nyaumwe is determined to keep going, at least for another few years.

Nyaumwe is one of the oldest players in the Zimbabwe Women’s Premier Soccer League but the veteran striker is showing no signs of slowing down.

Instead, she has been using her experience to full value.

Nyaumwe was in the thick of things when Correctional Queens beat former champions Black Rhinos 1-0 in a blockbuster Women’s Premiership tie at Yadah Complex B Arena last Saturday.

The win pushed the prison wardens to 24 points and also cemented Correctional Queens’ status as one of the favourites for this year’s women’s top-flight championship.

“Our season has started on a positive note, morale is high in our camp,” Nyaumwe told Zimpapers Sports Hub.

Correctional Queens have posted eight wins in nine games.

They face yet another stern test of their pedigree in their next assignment against giants Herentals at their famous home, Wagadhugu, on Saturday.

The prison facility has undergone some notable renovations thanks to a sponsorship partnership between Correctional Queens and all-weather Women’s football friends, LM Auctioneers.

Correctional Queens’ last home game ended in victory against Mpopoma.

“We are looking forward to a good game against Herentals this weekend.

“Everyone is gearing up for this big game, one that we have to win to keep our hopes alive,” said Nyaumwe.

The veteran has been the leading light in a team that also boasts seemingly ageless and experienced keeper Chido Dzingirai.

Centre-back Egness Tumbare, Nadia Semba, Ashley Mutonga, Jesca Mudau and Vanessa Makoni are also part of Correctional Queens.

“We are like a family, we understand each other and we look after each other,” said Nyaumwe, a former Mufakose Queens and Black Rhinos star striker.

Nyaumwe started her career at Mufakose Queens in the early 2000s.

“I don’t do drugs and I guess that’s the reason why I have stayed in the game for this long,” said the former Mighty Warriors star.

Nyaumwe was part of the Mighty Warriors squad that played at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.

But she has regrets over that tournament.

“We made history but we got nothing out of it. We were promised housing stands when we qualified for the Olympics but nothing materialised.

“Maybe if we were boys we would have been given something.

“I am still bitter about the treatment we got post the Olympic Games in Brazil,” Nyaumwe said.

Goalkeeper Dzingirai, Lynett Mutokuto, Sheila Makoto, Nobuhle Majika, Emmaculate Msipa, Mavis Chirandu, Daisy Kaitano, Felistas “Figo” Muzongondi and Kudakwashe Basopo were also part of that history-making Mighty Warriors squad.
