Nyoni signs Reds long-term deal

TREY Nyoni has committed the next few years of his young career to Liverpool, signing a new long-term contract with the club.

Nyoni has impressed Arne Slot significantly during the head coach’s first pre-season. Now, a year later, the young midfielder has marked his 18th birthday by putting pen to paper on a new deal.

Though he’s only been at Liverpool for just under two years, Nyoni has already caught the eye of his coaches with his technical quality, ball-carrying ability, and creativity in tight spaces.

So confident was he in possession that Slot included him in Liverpool’s USA tour last summer. He later scored on the team’s return to Anfield in a pre-season friendly against Sevilla.

His most notable competitive outing came in a tricky 2–1 League Cup win, away at Southampton, played under stormy conditions.

Nyoni arrived on Merseyside in 2023 from Leicester, joining as a 16-year-old already experienced in the U18 Premier League.

When Jurgen Klopp handed him his senior debut, coming off the bench in a 3–0 FA Cup win over Southampton in February 2024, Nyoni became the fourth-youngest debutant in Liver-pool history, at just 16 years and 243 days.

The England youth international made five senior appearances during the 2024/25 season, including two starts, and was named on the bench a further seven times.

After a pre-season match against Real Betis, where Nyoni stood out during his hour on the pitch, Slot offered both praise and a note of caution.

“I think he did really well today, but it was only an hour,” Slot said.

“He was one of the reasons why we scored the goal, because he turned really quickly and played a spot-on pass between the lines. He was also involved in the biggest chance of the second half.

“So he did well, but he’d just turned 17. His body still has to grow — and we’re really careful with him. He doesn’t join every session, and sometimes he goes out a bit earlier.

“You can see his quality, but you can also see his body still needs time to grow into Premier League level. But he showed some interesting things today.”

By offering him a new long-term contract, Liverpool are backing Nyoni’s technical ability while giving him time to physically develop into a top-level athlete.

In a recent interview with Liverpoolfc.com, Nyoni set high ambitions, saying he hopes to emulate former Reds midfielder Thiago Alcantara.

“Just his calmness on the ball, how elegant he is . . . and he was underrated off the ball too, he worked really hard,” said Nyoni. “His elegance on the ball is just top.”

“I was playing midfield before I came here, so I’d already started playing in different roles, like a six, eight and 10.

“I think it’s good for me because I get a lot of the ball. I’m happy to be on the pitch any-where, but I like playing as a six or eight.

“That’s where I’m most comfortable, because I like seeing the game and playing passes through the lines.” — Sports Reporter /This is Anfield
