ORDINARY level pupils in Zimbabwe are concerned with drug abuse and rural deforestation, the organisers of this year’s Randalls National Essay Competition have said.
A statement issued in Harare yesterday said most of the pupils who entered the competition chose to write on the two topics.
The essays, which were submitted to the adjudicators during the first school term, are now being marked by judges from the Ministry of Education and Culture’s Curriculum Development Unit and Belvedere Teachers’ College.
The winning essay will be chosen from a shortlist of 40 after the judges have read all the essays.
LESSONS FOR TODAY
Drug abuse is a serious issue across the world that has caused untold suffering to families and members of society. It has torn families and societies apart and has had negative consequences especially among the youths, who are supposed to be tomorrow’s leaders.
Getting youths to write and talk about drugs freely is one way of reaching out and exposing the dangers that drugs pose and also getting people to come together and fight the scourge of drug abuse.
The fight to eradicate drug abuse requires a holistic approach by all stakeholders because it affects everyone and is thus everyone’s responsibility.
