Obstruction of justice rap for cop basher

A BULAWAYO man yesterday appeared in court for allegedly pushing and punching a police officer who was arresting his friend at Mathonisa beer garden. Dennis Zhande, 24, appeared before magistrate Sheunesu Matova charged with obstruction of justice. He pleaded not guilty to the charge and was remanded in custody to October 26.

“I didn’t hit or push the police officer. I’m innocent,” said Zhande. Prosecuting, Mufaro Mageza said on October 17 at around 2PM, Constable Norman Nzvungu arrested Jabulani Ncube for an assault case.

“Cst Nzvungu located Ncube at Mathonsi beer garden and handcuffed him without any resistance. While at the scene, Zhande pushed the police officer to the ground and punched him in the face and as a result he bled from the mouth,” he said.

Ncube tried to stop the police officer form making a lawful arrest, the court heard. Lawrence Mutoma, a member of the neighbourhood watch police assisted Cst Nzvungu to arrest Zhande.
