THE Sports Commission, together with the Ministry of Sport and Recreation, government ministries and national sport associations yesterday began an inspection tour of the sporting and accommodation facilities for the upcoming National Youth Games in Matabeleland North.

The purpose of the tour is to ascertain the state of preparedness of the Local Organising Committee to host the 15th edition of the Games, which have been expanded to 22 sport codes from eight.

The Games are scheduled for August 17 to 27 and they will be spread to different areas in the province.

Bulawayo will also host some of the disciplines such as cricket, hockey and cycling because of the unavailability of standard facilities in Matabeleland North.

Sports Commission corporate communications officer Tirivashe Nheweyembwa confirmed the development.

“The various officials managed to tour Khumalo Hockey Stadium, Heath Streak Cricket Academy, Busters Cricket Academy, BMX Cycling Club, Bulawayo Athletics Club, Bulawayo Swimming Baths and ended the tour in Bulawayo with a visit to United College of Education where the athletes will be accommodated,” said Nheweyembwa.
