Old Miltonians, Bulldogs win as rugby league returns

OLD Miltonians (OMs) and Bulldogs kicked off the second half of the 2024 Bulawayo Metropolitan Rugby Football Board (BMRFB) Archer Clothing Rugby League with impressive performances.  OMs continued their winning streak with a massive 59-3 victory over Panthers, while Bulldogs secured their first win of the season with a 29-11 victory over Highlanders.

Despite their win, Bulldogs remain anchored at the bottom of the standings, while OMs’ impressive victory opened up a nine-point lead between them and defending champions, Matabeleland Warriors.  Only two matches were played following a one-week mid-season break, giving players the time to recover from the gruelling first half of games.

After registering their first win of the season, Bulldogs gaffer Newman Hlatshwayo was a relieved man, saying the players had time to introspect during the game.  He believes Saturday’s win could be the genesis of something good.

“Great win and a great result for us. It was a wonderful performance from the boys and shows that they have reflected on the first half of the league.
“We have to build on that  going forward and keep the momentum. Hopefully, it is the start of some positive results,” said Hlatshwayo.

Hlatshwayo’s men are now tied on six points with the fourth-placed Panthers who were pummelled by OMs.  Women’s league action also returned, with Highlanders and Panthers Ladies drawing 10-10 in their match.  The two sides are, however, still far off log leaders, Warriors, who are on 20 points from four matches. Highlanders are now on nine points while Panthers are on four.

Action resumes this Saturday, with fixtures yet to be confirmed. — @brandon_malvin
