A mine worker at Old Nic Mine on the outskirts of Bulawayo has appeared in court for allegedly stealing gold ore from an underground shaft.

Thabiso Moyo (32), of Mzilikazi, appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Ms Patience Madondo facing theft charges.
He was remanded in custody to a later date pending the production of a forensic report to determine the weight and value of the alleged stolen ore.

Prosecuting, Mr Joseph Rugara told the court that on 5 December at around 6pm, Moyo reported for duty at the mine’s northern underground shaft.

“The following morning at around 4.30am, the accused came out of the shaft after knocking off duty.
Upon exit, he was searched by a security guard manning the gate,” said Mr Rugara.

During the search, Moyo was allegedly found with six small stones of gold ore wrapped in plastic and concealed in the pocket of his boxer shorts.

He was immediately apprehended.

Moyo was later handed over to the CID Minerals, Flora and Fauna Unit (MFFU) in Bulawayo, where he was arrested.
