RISING sungura artiste, Elliot Oliver, is making a grand return to Zimbabwe’s music scene with the launch of his highly anticipated second album, “Rairo”, following a seven-year hiatus.
Known for his consistent presence in the province and as a curtain-raiser for top artistes, Oliver promises a project that blends cultural wisdom, spiritual guidance, and heartfelt life lessons.
Born 47 years ago in Rushinga, Mount Darwin, Oliver first made waves in 2017 with his debut album, “Ndafunga Kure”, a six-track collection that established him as one of the most reliable sungura performers in the region.
With “Rairo”, he aims to deepen his connection with fans by weaving advice for different walks of life into each song, reminding listeners of the importance of faith, family, and responsibility.
Songs on the new album are “Imba Dzevana”, “Hakusi Kuchenjera”, “Moyoi”, “Makolo Atu”, “Mwana Wangu Wakura” and “Amai Vevana”.
The song, “Imba Dzevana”, serves as a guide to children, highlighting moral values, respect, and the importance of education.
Elliot uses simple, yet evocative lyrics to instil foundational lessons, ensuring that the younger generation can navigate life with wisdom and integrity.
Its upbeat rhythm makes the learning experience enjoyable, showing that songs can be both entertaining and instructive.
In “Hakusi Kuchenjera”, Oliver reminds listeners that it is not one’s intellect or personal cunning that ensures success and wellbeing, but the grace of God.
The song emphasises humility, spiritual reliance, and gratitude, encouraging audiences to acknowledge a higher power in everyday achievements. Its reflective tone invites contemplation while remaining musically engaging.
A socially conscious track, “Moyoi (Unenge Dombo)” addresses the scourge of child abandonment.
Elliot delivers a compelling warning against neglecting one’s parental duties, urging fathers and families to take responsibility. The song balances emotional depth with catchy sungura instrumentation, making a serious message accessible without losing its entertainment value.
Sung in the Malawian dialect, “Makolo Atu” is a cultural homage, urging listeners to remember their roots. It celebrates parents, guardians, and ancestral guidance, reinforcing the importance of heritage and gratitude. The song’s melodic flow and rhythmic energy make it a standout, creating a sense of pride and belonging among listeners.
The track “Mwana Wangu Wakura”, speaks to young adults and newlyweds, encouraging them to embrace and cherish their spouses. It is a tender reflection on love, maturity, and commitment, blending heartfelt lyrics with Oliver’s signature sungura style to deliver a message that resonates across generations.
Closing the album, “Amai Verudo” pays tribute to mothers and women of love, highlighting their sacrifices and pivotal roles in family and society. With warm, melodic arrangements, the song captures the essence of gratitude, respect, and admiration, rounding off “Rairo” on a deeply emotional note.
Oliver told Weekender Entertainment, that he believes the album will scale him to dizzy heights, considering the heavy and heart wrenching lyrics.
“I am back, and I couldn’t be more excited to share ‘Rairo’ with my fans. This album is a collection of messages meant to inspire, educate, and uplift.
“Each song carries a piece of my heart, a reflection of experiences and observations over the years. I believe the advice I share, whether about children, parents, or spiritual life, will resonate with listeners for years to come.
“Music has the power to guide and influence, and through this album, I hope to leave a legacy of positivity, responsibility, and faith. It has been seven years since ‘Ndafunga Kure’, and during this time, I have grown as an artiste and as a person. ‘Rairo’ is my way of giving back to the community that has supported me, reminding everyone that no matter where life takes us, we can always rely on God, honour our families, and nurture love in all its forms,” he said.
Oliver added that he is also determined to elevate his music business.
He plans to focus on better marketing strategies, wider distribution, and improved visibility to ensure that the new project reaches a broad audience.
By combining traditional sungura roots with modern promotion techniques, he aims to strengthen his brand and secure a lasting impact in Zimbabwe’s music industry.
The album will be launched on March 28 at Mandel Leisure Centre, in Watsomba, where Oliver will headline the event.
Various artistes from across various genres are also lined up to perform on the day.
