BATSIRAI Zimcare Special School got an early Christmas present when Olympiad Academy and Dare to Dream Charity donated a consortium of goods to the home yesterday.
The Dzivarasekwa-based care centre is home to over 50 mentally handicapped and underprivileged children of ages 5-18 years.
Olympiad Academy managed to raise funds by holding this year’s Olympiad Harare Primary Schools Chess Tournament in September.
Through the chess tournament’s proceeds, the team managed to donate above 950 articles of clothing, 700 library books, mealie meal, gardening equipment, biscuits and cleaning detergents to Batsirai Zimcare Special School.
Tawona Magede, the head administrator of Olympiad Academy, said they felt it was important for them to give back to the community and they settled for Batsirai Zimcare Special School.
“Whilst I was still doing Lower Six at St. George’s College, I served at the school for my community project and I realised that resources were scarce. We then joined hands with Dare to Dream Charity to further enhance their donation capacity, which helped us.
“It was a fulfilling experience for Olympiad students who were present. We are grateful to everyone who came on board like Sijeka Incorporated, Pulse Pharmaceuticals as well as Hellenic Interact who were able to put together a significant amount of clothes and books,” said Magede.
In the hope to empower Batsirai Special School to be self-sufficient and provide a living for the enabled school leavers of the school, Olympiad Academy plans to facilitate the development of a hydroponics system into Batsirai’s agricultural system in the next two years.
