THE highly anticipated Bulawayo Metropolitan Rugby Football Board (BMRFB) Under-20 league clash between Old Miltonians (OMs) and Christian Brothers College (CBC Hornets) turned out to be a one-sided affair with the former dominating from the start.
OMs proved a class above and too hot for the students to handle when they thumped them 57-0 to maintain their unbeaten run in the league.
The match was played on Saturday at the city’s ceremonial home of rugby, Hartsfield Rugby Grounds and both teams had their fair share of support.
Despite the victory over the defending champions, OMs assistant coach Victor Chiwara – who was standing in for head coach Nelson Madida – said he was unimpressed with their second-half performance but overall proud of his charges who showed character and strength.
However, he said that there is still some work that still needs to be done.
“A win is a win at the end of the day and we are happy for it. The performance wasn’t as good as we wanted it to be, it got a little scrappy in the second half.
“We went to the half time with a lead of close to 40 so there’s a lot to work on. Our defense wasn’t really that good but at the end of the day we are happy for the win,” said Chiwara.
After the completion of the league, Chiwara said they have a few more games lined up outside Bulawayo so that their players get a feel of different oppositions and test where they are standing.
“I think we are wrapping up this side next week and the idea is to – after the league – try and have a couple of games in Harare. We have a few games lined up just for the boys to test themselves and get a bit of exposure,” he said.
Minutes after play started, OMs drew first blood, scoring and converting their first of many tries to follow later on as the game proceeded.
They would go on to score four more tries in the second half – two converted – to go into the halftime break with a 29-0 lead. OMs would almost double their lead in the second half as they scored 28 points to make it 57-0 and continue their league dominance.
OMs next encounter is against Panthers while Hornets will be looking to redeem themselves when they face Bulawayo Elephants.
Other matches that are lined up for the next round of fixtures will see Highlanders face Petra while Bulldogs will be up against Plumtree Buffaloes. In women’s matches, Panthers will be up against Montrose and Highlanders will face Bulldogs.
