Once again, Mensah rises for MWOS at Ngoni

AT its core, football is a game of probabilities where a pass may succeed or fail, a shot may find the target or miss because of some smallest details.

But MWOS striker Wilson Mensah appears to be an exception with his brace in their 2-0 victory over FC Platinum at Ngoni yesterday defying this rule.

Two half chances created in the second half both sunk by Mensah eliminated uncertainty altogether.
In fact, in the past three games, MWOS have scored five goals and all of them came from Mensah.

“I am happy with Mensah’s turn around, last season we used him as a substitute and he would operate from wide areas but this time we converted him into a centre striker and he did not disappoint,” said MWOS head coach Lloyd Mutasa.

Coming into yesterday’s game, MWOS started off with caution as they chased the game while FC Platinum dictated pace.

In the 15th minute Isaska Gurirab came through when he broke loose from the centre, outpacing MWOS defence only for Aristotle Manyamba to make a quick recovery and shut him out.

MWOS FC would up their game, taking control of possession as they launched successive attacks through long balls to bypass the Platinum midfield by exerting pressure on the backline.

It was not long before a reward almost came for them when Dawid Ndeunyema delivered a cross into the box in the 25th minute but the ball bounced off the bar, back into play, landing exactly where Mensah was lurking.

MWOS would come up with another chance, a set piece from Reginald Chinemo in the 27th minute when he took it past the FC Platinum wall forcing Raphael Pitisi to make a save.

A determined Ndeunyema could have capped off the first stanza with one for the hosts after flooring Garikai Demastika right at the dearth before taking a long range shot from outside the 18-yards.

However, Pitisi was alert to rescue the platinum miners again taking to the halftime break with nothing separating the two sides.

Returning in the second half, MWOS had the upper hand, dominating possession as they dominated the midfield.
In the 48th minute MWOS survived a Thubelihle Jubani cross into the box as Tizayi was equal to the task.
On 55 minutes Mensah found the target.

FC Platinum relentlessly tried to fight back, but Tizayi was their brick wall.

Visibly under pressure, Mensah broke from the middle of the park capitalising on a Vitapi Ngaruka error as he surged into the box to unleash a thunderbolt that beat Pitisi to make it 2-0.

“We knew we were playing a tough opponent and we needed to be technically ahead so we decided to use the long ball and destabilise their midfield and it worked,” added Mutasa.

“It takes some pressure off our shoulders and now we can prepare for the coming game without pressure.”
The visitors’ Joel Luphahla left Ngoni disappointed.

“We conceded from blunders, something that I feel we could have avoided… now we are almost in the relegation zone and this is unacceptable,” he said.
