ONE person died while eight others were seriously injured when a vehicle they were travelling in veered off the road before it overturned and landed on its roof.

Masvingo provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector  Masauso Patinyu confirmed the accident, which occurred on Thursday at around 8pm at a 49km peg along Chivhu-Roy Road.

“On April 17  at around 8pm, Ngwarai Bhasera aged 39 years of Kuwadzana 4 suburb in Harare was driving a Honda Stepwagon with nine passengers on board. Upon reaching a 49km peg, he hit a pothole and lost control of the vehicle,” he said.

“The car veered off the road and overturned twice before landing on its roof. One person died on the spot while eight others were seriously injured.”

Asst Insp Patinyu could not release the name of the deceased, saying they were yet to inform the next of kin.

The body was taken to Chivhu Hospital mortuary for post-mortem while the injured were admitted to the same hospital.

“As police, we continue to urge motorists to desist from reckless driving, speeding, and overloading. They should exercise caution, especially at night to avoid unnecessary loss of life,” said the police spokesperson.
