Topping the charts this week is Luchi Shiki with the song Yim Lo. Below is a profile of the artiste.
Q. Please tell us about yourself.
A. I’m a multidisciplinary artiste focused on music at the moment. I learnt at Robert Tredgold Primary School, Founders High School and Herentals Group of Colleges. I then furthered my studies at Bulawayo Polytechnic where I studied Applied Art and Design.
Q. How did you venture into music?
A. I come from a musical family so I’ve always been exposed to all kinds of music. I naturally took an interest in it as I believe it is one of the most powerful forms of art as it connects people and helps express the artiste and the audience’s emotions.
Q. What inspired the song Yim Lo?
A. It was inspired by my love journey. As a person who suffers from insecurities, especially physical ones, I wanted to create a song that would affirm me and whoever is listening. So to achieve this, I took inspiration from my clan’s praises “umageza ngochago” meaning she who bathes in milk. On the song, I worked with Murphy Cubic on the beat and Donny Chords recorded, mixed and mastered the song. For the music video, I worked with Urban Legend pictures.
Q. How long have you been in the music industry?
A. I think the safest answer is 2018 because that’s the first time I submitted my music to public platforms. Everything I did before that was for a few to experience.
Q. Which artistes have you worked with?
A. Larynx, Cal Vin, Msiz’kay, Black Umfolosi, Chuck the lunatic (CTL) Fish F Ndaramu, Rockie Doub, Tha Dawg, Dr Breeze and Apollo Soule.
Q. How many albums/EPs/singles do you have?
A. I have one five-track EP titled High On Oxy V1 and six singles. The most popular song is Shuga Shuga.
Q. Which music genre do you specialise in?
A. Afro-pop and contemporary RnB.
Q. What do you think makes a good song?
A. A good song for me is one which makes you feel something. It’s hard to explain because it’s such a natural feeling that it doesn’t matter the genre, anyone can listen and feel something.
Q. What do you think artistes from the city should do to be recognised?
A. Spend a lot of money.
Q. They say Bulawayo does not have its own sound. What’s your take on that? Do you think we need our own sound or lyrical content that people from the city can relate to?
A. They say a lot of things and they aren’t always right. I think we need to continue making music and supporting music. That’s what will create “our own sound”. It’s difficult to create lyrical content that’s based on things you’ve never been exposed to. So it’s crazy to assume Bulawayo artistes don’t use lyrics based on Bulawayo living.
