Opposition councillor calls for unity, constructive engagement on Independence Day

AN opposition councillor has called for greater political unity and constructive engagement across party lines, saying Independence Day should serve as a rallying point for national cohesion and development.

Speaking in an interview, Bulawayo Ward 26 Councillor Mpumelelo Moyo said the country has witnessed growing efforts toward inclusivity under the leadership of Emmerson Mnangagwa, particularly through the decentralisation of national events.

He cited the hosting of this year’s Independence Day celebrations in Maphisa as a key example, following similar commemorations held in Gokwe last year.

“Independence Day emphasises unity, and what we are seeing now is that these national events are being taken to different parts of the country, moving away from the traditional hosting in Harare. This reflects efforts to promote national cohesion,” said Cllr Moyo.

He said the attendance of political leaders from across the divide at such events was a positive sign, pointing to the presence of David Coltart at the Maphisa celebrations.

“That level of participation shows that unity can transcend political, tribal and social differences,” he said.

Cllr Moyo urged the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) to play a more active role in bridging political and social divisions, stressing the importance of constructive engagement.

“As the opposition, our role is to engage in national dialogue that benefits citizens, while also holding Government accountable. However, this must be done in a manner that does not create unnecessary divisions,” he said.

He added that participation in national events and informed engagement by public officials were critical in fostering unity and ensuring consistent communication of national policies.

Cllr Moyo also emphasised the need for public office bearers to focus on service delivery, particularly at local authority level.

“We are part of Government structures, especially at local level, and our duty is to provide solutions to the challenges facing our communities. In Bulawayo, for instance, issues such as water supply require practical solutions rather than constant criticism,” he said.

Reflecting on Zimbabwe’s independence, Cllr Moyo said significant progress had been made since 1980, particularly in expanding economic opportunities for the black majority.

“Today, Zimbabweans have access to land, mines and professions that were previously restricted. This represents a form of economic independence that we should be proud of,” he said.

  1. So what is this councillor in opposition for? He can still hold government accountable without being in opposition. He wants to have his cake and eat it too. Maybe it’s fashionable to be in “Opposition”? At the moment the country doesn’t need exceptionalism.
Coltart can remain in opposition because of his origins and beliefs but people like this councillor ended up in opposition because of poor judgement. Opposition does not serve any purpose in our body politic at this stage. We want development and it can be achieved remaining a unitary state with a monolithic and integrated population.
