ZIMPAPERS Reporters Langton Nyakwenda and Veronica Gwaze were part of journalists that got recognition from Zimbabwe Union of Journalists in the 2025 National Journalism and Media Awards held Thursday night.
Nyakwenda was Sports Journalist of the year while Gwaze won the Gender based Violence award.
Gwaze’s story that won her the award was that of a personality in the sports fraternity that had suffered gender based violence for close to two decades.
“With issues of Gender Based Violence taking centre stage on critical debates globally, spotlight is almost mainly on women as they are believed to be the chief victims. But while society, which is largely patriarchal and expects men to be macho, many of them are suffering in the shadows, and have turned into silent victims of GBV,” Gwaze said.
“It is against this back ground that i felt compelled to place myself in the shoes of men and lend them a listening ear. In the process, a renowned sports medic had the confidence to open up and share his close to 20-years long journey in “hell”.”
She applauded the support she received from her family and Zimpapers, precisely her editors and team mates who have played a key role in her nurturing in the industry.
Nyakwenda said: “I would like to obviously thank God for keeping me alive, and my family for the support. Credit also goes to Zimpapers for affording me the platform to shine at this level.
“My bosses and my workmates have played a crucial role in this achievement because we are always shaping fresh ideas and different news angles.”
