POLICE are looking for more than 1 241 motorists who are wanted for violating traffic light regulations in Harare and its surroundings following the implementation of the electronic traffic management system.
The police have released the vehicle registration numbers of the motorists’ vehicles. Motorists or institutions with vehicles on the list are urged to report to the nearest police station and cooperate fully with ongoing investigations.
In a statement, national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said, “The Zimbabwe Republic Police has released the registration numbers for vehicles which were captured through the Electronic Traffic Management System for violating red traffic lights
in Harare Central Business District.
“All the vehicle owners with registration numbers on the attached list are advised to report to any nearest Police Station to assist in the ongoing investigations within the next seven days. Vehicle owners and those in possession of the vehicles are urged to
cooperate with the police to assist in the maintenance of law and order in the country.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police implores motorists to observe road rules and regulations to enhance the smooth flow of traffic and curb road traffic accidents.”
The initiative is part of a broader effort to improve road safety and compliance. The Government has partnered with Vitronic Machine Vision Middle East, a Dubai-based company, to roll out the digital traffic management system under a public-private partnership.
The initial investment of approximately US$80 million aims to use technology to effectively address traffic-related challenges.
By holding offenders accountable, police hope to ensure that no individual, regardless of their status or connections, escapes the consequences of breaking the law.
This marks a significant step towards enhancing road safety and compliance in Zimbabwe at a time when fatal accidents are on the rise.
Recently, police launched an operation targeting 20 000 motorists in Harare and Bulawayo who were wanted for violating traffic light regulations following the implementation of the electronic traffic management system.
By then police disclosed details of nearly 300 offenders, with 95 motorists having complied with the law since the list was published.
Comm Nyathi said the electronic traffic management system has recorded a total of 20 000 vehicles openly flouting road regulations.
The police will regularly release updates on these vehicles to the public.
Motorists or institutions with vehicles on the list are urged reach out to the National Complaints Desk at (0242) 703631 or via WhatsApp at 0712 800 197.
