OVER 400 pirate taxis had been impounded by Friday last week during the ongoing joint operation by the Zimbabwe Republic Police and Harare City Council to rid the city of vice and disorder.
The joint operation is targeting pirate taxis and commuter omnibuses flouting traffic regulations.
In an interview, council spokesperson Mr Michael Chideme confirmed the development.
“The joint operation is still ongoing until we rid the city of all illegal activities,” he said. “We have so far impounded 440 vehicles in the city during the operation.”
The vehicles were impounded between September 15 and Friday last week.
Mr Chideme said the impounded pirate taxis would be vetted to check if they were licensed, paid import duties or used in committing crime.
This comes after the police recently launched a countrywide operation targeting unregistered vehicles and motorists flouting traffic regulations and endangering the lives of other road users.
The crackdown on unregistered vehicles comes in the wake of a spate of armed robberies countrywide, as criminals are using such vehicles to evade arrest.
Some of the vehicles were involved in hit-and-run accidents.
