TWO people died on the spot when a vehicle hit them on the roadside after it veered off the road following an overtaking error involving a truck on Friday along the Mutare-Harare Highway.
Police confirmed the accident on the X (formerly Twitter) handle.
“Police confirm a fatal road accident that occurred at the 24km peg along the Mutare-Harare Highway on Friday, January 9, 2026 involving two vehicles and two pedestrians. A Toyota Lexus with one passenger on board was travelling towards Mutare behind a Shacman Truck towing a trailer, which was moving in the same direction.
“The Toyota Lexus attempted to overtake the truck as it was about to turn right. In the process, the Toyota Lexus struck the right front corner lamp of the truck, resulting in the driver losing control of the vehicle before it veered off the road,” said the police.
The vehicle hit two pedestrians who both died on the spot.
“The Shacman truck stopped briefly after the accident and fled from the scene,” added the police.
The bodies of the deceased were ferried to Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital for post-mortem.
