how much they had won. Mr Whitehouse, a retired British Gas engineer, bought the ticket on New Year’s Day immediately after being released from hospital where he had been treated for a heart condition.
However, the couple, who are in their 60s, only realised they’d become millionaires when they went shopping the following day and picked up a copy of the winning numbers. Initially, they thought they’d won less than £10.
“At first I saw that I’d matched on number and a couple of lucky stars, so assumed I’d won less than £10,” Mr Whitehouse said. “It was only when I checked again I realised I’d matched the raffle selection for £1 million as well.
“I couldn’t believe my eyes. We had such a stressful start to the year and then it all turned around in one moment.” The pair plan to replace their old car with a Ford Focus and upgrade their one-bedroom flat in Minehead to a two-bedroom bungalow.
Mrs Whitehouse said: “We’re going to buy a new bungalow and he’s going to get a new car and look after the kids.” — The Telegraph.
