POLICE in Bulawayo have arrested two men found in possession of illegal medical drugs. Acting on a tip-off, police pounced on Owen Siyapi, 37, of Entumbane suburb and Praise Dube, 43, from Pumula South suburb. Police sources said after conducting a search, detectives from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), recovered a consignment of drugs such as aspen-granisetron, zoxadan, kalzinol powder and cilodex.
Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Mandlenkosi Moyo declined to comment on the arrest. However, a police source who requested anonymity said the detectives received a tip-off from members of the public that the pair had left their drugs in a parcel counter of a city supermarket.
“Acting on information received, the detectives went to the supermarket and spotted Siyapi who they placed under surveillance and searched him leading to the discovery of the supermarket parcel counter disc,” said the source.
“The team went to the counter of the shop (name withheld) where the suspect produced his disc to the parcel counter attendant who produced a plastic bag containing a pack of 50×30 1mg zoxadan tablets. The medicine is not registered in the country.”
The source said detectives later recovered more drugs at Siyapi’s residence in Entumbane. It is believed the drugs were smuggled into the country.
Health experts say zoxadan drugs are not suitable for hyperactive individuals and people with allergies and should not be taken by children under the age of five while Aspen Granisetron is used to prevent nausea and vomiting caused by cancer chemotherapy and radiation therapy.
