
ISLAMABAD — Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif yesterday in his Independence Day address pledged to defeat terrorism with the support of the security forces and the people. “Though the shadows of terrorism are haunting us today but with commitment and resolve we will overcome this scourge,” Sharif said at the hoisting of the national flag to formally begin celebrations of Pakistan’s 67th Independence Day.
He was confident that with the cooperation of Pakistan Army, security agencies and the nation, terrorism will be eliminated and Pakistan will be made hub of peace and security.
The ceremony was attended by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, envoys of different countries, federal ministers and parliamentarians. On the occasion, students drawn from different schools enthralled the audience with the national songs.
While referring to the presence of Ban Ki-moon at the Independence Day celebrations, Nawaz Sharif said Pakistan has been an important component of the UN peace keeping missions and the presence of the UN Secretary-General is an acknowledgment of Pakistan’s services. – Xinhua
