THE State of Palestine has congratulated Zimbabwe following its election to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2027–2028 term and described the achievement as a strong endorsement of the country’s diplomatic standing and commitment to international cooperation.

In a statement, Palestinian Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Dr Tamer Almassri, said Zimbabwe’s election by an overwhelming mandate at the United Nations General Assembly reflected the confidence and respect the international community has in the country.

“This significant achievement, secured by an overwhelming mandate at the United Nations General Assembly, is a testament to the respect and confidence that the international community bestow upon Zimbabwe,” he said.

Ambassador Almassri said the election was a clear recognition of Zimbabwe’s commitment to diplomacy, its advocacy for the sovereignty of nations and its pursuit of a more equitable international order.

He expressed confidence that Zimbabwe would play a key role in advancing the interests of developing nations during its tenure on the Security Council.

“As Zimbabwe prepares to take its seat at the horseshoe table, the State of Palestine is confident that the Republic of Zimbabwe will serve as a powerful voice for the Global South,” Ambassador Almassri said.

“We trust that Zimbabwe will continue its principled defence of international law, the protection of civilian populations, and the necessity of multilateral solutions to the world’s most pressing conflicts.”

Ambassador Almassri said Zimbabwe’s presence on the council comes at a time when global peace and security mechanisms are facing increasing pressure from conflicts and geopolitical tensions.

“In these challenging times, when the global architecture for peace is being tested, the presence of a nation that understands the value of peace, dialogue and non-interference is a vital contribution to the council,” he said.

The Palestinian envoy also reaffirmed the longstanding relations between Palestine and Zimbabwe, rooted in a shared history of liberation struggles and the pursuit of self-determination.

“The State of Palestine reaffirms its deep fraternal bond with the Republic of Zimbabwe, shared history and the common struggle for national liberation, self-determination and justice,” he said.

“We have stood together as partners in the pursuit of freedom, and we remain deeply appreciative of Zimbabwe’s unwavering solidarity with the Palestinian people in our quest for an independent, sovereign state with Jerusalem as its capital.”

Ambassador Almassri said Palestine looked forward to strengthening bilateral relations with Zimbabwe and wished the country continued success in its diplomatic engagements on the international stage.

Zimbabwe was elected to the 15-member UNSC for a two-year term beginning in January 2027, joining the world’s principal body responsible for maintaining international peace and security.

The election is widely viewed as a major diplomatic milestone for the country and an opportunity to amplify Africa’s voice on key global issues.
