ZIMBABWE Prison Services runner Kelvin Pangiso claimed the Gutu half marathon title in a below par time of 1 hour 8minutes 31seconds yesterday.

Last year’s winner Elijah Mabhunu was forced into fourth place as Nkosiyazi Sibanda came second in 1 hr 9 mins 4s while Isaac Mpofu was third in 1hr 9mins 25s.

Pangiso, who was suffering from a severe headache in the past two weeks, claimed the $600 prize money.

Pangiso said yesterday’s victory was the kind of motivation he wanted ahead of next week’s Vumba race in Mutare.

Olivia Chitate came first in the women’s section in 1hr 22mins 20s, followed by Constance Nyasango in 1hr 24mins 18s.

Faith Sanyika settled for third position in 1hr 28mins 20s.

The absence of inform runner Rutendo Nyahora created an opportunity for Chitate in the women’s section.

Chitate promised fireworks at next week’s event

“I have been working hard and I will do my best once again next Saturday,” said Chitate.

The Gutu half marathon is a brainchild of the late Vice-President, Simon Muzenda, and is held annually at Mupandawana growth point.
