Parents allege withholding of O-Level results at Fletcher High School in Gweru

PARENTS with children who recently completed O Levels at Fletcher High School in Gweru are up in arms with authorities after the institution allegedly withheld results for some pupils in contravention of a Government position that schools should never withhold results..

According to the parents, learners doing Electrical Installation and Maintenance were supposed to buy at least 3 electrical conduits and submit them to the school.

“I then came to the school to collect my kid’s results but I was told my kid owes the school some electrical conduits. I later realised there were many pupils whose results are being withheld over these conduits,” said a parent who requested not to be named.

The parents said the withholding of results was now depriving their children of placements for Lower Six.

“I am supposed to look for a Lower Six place but we can’t because they are withholding results,” said another parent.

The parents accused a science teacher of taking advantage of the subject to demand an excess number of conduits for his use.

“We don’t think these conduits are for use at school because almost every pupil is doing the subject so we don’t think all of them are used for practicals. The school should just put a certain amount on school fees to avoid the abuse of this current arrangement,” he said.

Fletcher High School Head, Mr Elijah Mazula denied allegations the school was withholding some pupils’ results.

“You come to the school and investigate what is happening at the school, that’s what I can say to you,” he said, without clarifying how the school was handling the issue of pupils owing the conduits.
