Parliamentary committee investigates Bulawayo’s water crisis

THE Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Local Government, Parliamentary Portfolio Committee is in Bulawayo on a three- day fact finding mission on the city’s water crisis.

Bulawayo is experiencing a severe water crisis which has seen the Bulawayo City Council implementing an 120-hour weekly water shedding programme.

The water crisis is a result of low water levels at the city’s dams.

The mission commences on Monday morning with the Parliamentarians engaging Bulawayo Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Judth Ncube’s office, council management and councillors, Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development and Local Government and Public Works Ministry.

The committee will also engage residents’ representatives where public hearings will be conducted one in the city centre at City Hall and another in Cowdray Park on Monday afternoon.

On Tuesday, the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee will tour Umzingwane, Upper Ncema and Lower Ncema Dams where they will get briefings from council with the day’s business being concluded by visiting Nyamandlovu aquifer.

The programme will be concluded on Wednesday where the committee will tour the Gwayi-Shangani Dam project which is under construction and is viewed as the permanent solution to the city’s water crisis.
