Parliament’s Committee on standing Rules and Orders on Friday conducted interviews to fill vacancies in the Zimbabwe Gender Commission.
The committee arranged public interviews of seven shortlisted candidates to fill the vacancies on the commission in line with constitutional provisions.
The advertisement from Parliament solicited nominations for one female and two male commissioners, one of whom should have a legal background.
The interviews were carried out in the Senate chamber at Parliament building.
Parliament received nine nominations, five men and four women from which the committee shortlisted the candidates to serve in the Commission.
The committee, the central and most important in Parliament, is mandated in terms of sections 237 and 245 of the Constitution to nominate candidates for appointment by the President Mnangagwa to serve as commissioners of the Zimbabwe Gender Commission.
“In line with the said mandate, the committee called on the public to nominate persons to be considered for appointment to the Commission whose functions and person specifications are outlined under Section 246 of the Constitution,” read the statement from Parliament.
The seven shortlisted candidates were: Mr David Chenai Chafanza, Ms Agnella Chimedza, Mr Denford Dzingirai Chirindo, Mr Jigu Katsande, Mr Tonderai Mufuka, Mr Tamiswa Timothy Njovana and Mrs Angeline Vere.
Some of the questions the candidates were asked included why they thought they were suitable for the positions, the importance of the ZGC, international treaties and protocols on gender that Zimbabwe is party to, the Sustainable Development Goals that have an impact on the work of the commission and Zimbabwe’s constitutional provisions on gender equality.
