PARLIAMENT has paid tribute to the Zimbabwe Cricket team, the Chevrons, following a “giant killing” run at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, where they recorded impressive victories over cricket powerhouses including Sri Lanka and Australia.
Speaking in the National Assembly yesterday, Nyanga South Member of Parliament Supa Mandiwanzira applauded the team’s achievements and acknowledged what he described as the supportive environment that has enabled success in sport.
He said the country’s leadership has helped create conditions conducive to the development of sport, and that the Chevrons’ recent performances were a reflection of this.
“In this regard, it is fitting to acknowledge the support of His Excellency President Mnangagwa to Zimbabwean sport, which has helped create an enabling environment in which talent can flourish and excellence can be pursued with confidence.
“I rise on a Point of National Interest to congratulate the Zimbabwe national cricket team, the Chevrons, on their outstanding and historic performance at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, having qualified for the Super Eight stage after completing the group phase unbeaten,” Mandiwanzira said.
He emphasised that the team’s success was built on sustained effort rather than chance. “It has a background. It has a history. It is steeped in sustained institutional support, steady leadership, and a national commitment to the development of sport, giving this achievement a clear provenance rather than the appearance of chance.”
Mandiwanzira praised the players for their discipline and resilience, noting the impact of their unity and determination.
“Special recognition is due to the team’s captain Sikandar Raza, whose leadership on and off the field has been exemplary, and to the Head Coach, Dave Houghton, whose technical guidance and institutional memory have strengthened the team’s competitive edge.”
He said the Chevrons’ recent performances against established cricket nations — including victories over Sri Lanka and Australia — had reignited national pride and reaffirmed Zimbabwe’s capability to compete confidently at elite level.
“It is also appropriate to pay homage to the Chairman of Zimbabwe Cricket, Honourable Tavengwa Mukuhlani, a fellow Member of this House, for his stewardship in guiding the institution through a period of renewal and stability.
It is therefore fitting that this House places on record its appreciation of the Chevrons for the honour they have brought to Zimbabwe,” Mandiwanzira said.
Speaker of Parliament Advocate Jacob Mudenda welcomed the submission, noting that sport plays a role in enhancing diplomacy.
