ENHANCED cognitive function, resulting from regular exercise — such as running, aerobics or tug-of-war — remains a vital component of a healthy life.

This idea has gained traction, as wellness studies indicate that consistent physical activity can significantly boost brain function, leading to improvements in memory, focus and overall cognitive abilities. Moreover, regular exercise plays a crucial role in stress reduction.

Research shows that physical activity promotes the release of endorphins, natural mood lifters that combat stress. In addition to these mental benefits, regular exercise also enhances self-esteem.

Achieving fitness goals fosters self-confidence and a sense of accomplishment — qualities that are particularly valuable in today’s world, where many people face economic challenges.

A notable advocate for mental wellness and fitness is Kudzai Pasipanodya of Musabvunda Fitness and Lifestyle. This movement aims to inspire and empower individuals to lead healthier lives.

For the past decade, his name has resonated well with fitness enthusiasts. Not only has Pasipanodya been at the forefront of the movement, but he also demonstrates how it should be done. Over the years, he has managed to partake in some of the gruelling workouts recognised on the continent.

This year, he participated in the Comrades Marathon in Durban, South Africa. Although he took part in this event while nursing an injury, he managed to complete the 90 km race in 10 hours. During his peak fitness years, he would clock nine hours to finish one of the toughest races on the continent.

Back home, he has become a household name, continuing to lead from the front in mental wellness and fitness campaigns. For him, it has become a lifestyle, which earned him more respect during the Covid-19-induced lockdown, where he inspired runners, fitness enthusiasts, and clubs to embrace this wave. It’s a wave that resembles a cult; it is very difficult to leave once initiated.

At the end of this month, he will hold a two-day mental wellness program dubbed the Musabvunda Fitness and Music Festival at Blakiston Primary School in Harare. All of this is being done to promote mental wellness, which has become a significant focus in the local sporting community.

“To me, mental wellness and fitness have become a lifestyle. For the past 10 years, I am glad that I have managed to convince many people to take it seriously,” he stressed. “This practice became popular during the Covid-19 lockdown when many people were lying idle. At our stable, we have used it as a remedy to address issues including depression and to raise self-esteem and confidence. With fitness and regular practice, you know you have a free mind, and this is what we have been advocating for over the years.”

Musabvunda, reflecting on his influence during the Covid-19 era, pointed out that fitness and wellness are no longer options but necessities, given all the lessons learned during the pandemic.

“Several sectors have made people realise the importance of fitness, especially during the Covid-19 era when this movement began. The message we promoted then was, ‘A healthy lifestyle will prolong your life; my fitness lifestyle will keep the doctor away.’ We believe that people have caught on to the idea that fitness is critical in fighting chronic diseases,” shared Pasipanodya.

The fitness guru highlighted that regular exercise is also key to enhancing productivity at work.

“Research has shown that productivity among employees is linked to their fitness and health status. Many cooperatives have embarked on awareness programs. Employers have realised that exercising helps improve employee productivity. Many corporations have initiated mental wellness programmes because they recognise their benefits,” asserted Pasipanodya.

With a vision anchored in excellence, productivity, and maximum capacity utilization, both at individual and organisational levels, Pasipanodya has vowed to make an impression this time around.

“Over the past decade or so, I have lost count of the athletes that I have trained and mentored. Some of these participants who have been part of my journey have never stopped this lifestyle, which should never be quit. I can equate it to Christianity; converts should never stumble or revert to their old ways because when demons attack them again, they will come back stronger and won’t recover,” he stated.

The Bikita-born fitness guru noted that the journey into exercising requires patience.

“For beginners, they should take it step by step, and the first 21 days will always shape their journey and destiny. What I know is that when one joins this movement, they won’t quit because it is enjoyable and a marvel to practice.”

For Pasipanodya, he claims that he was born an athlete who excelled in volleyball and running.

“Growing up in rural Bikita, Masvingo, I was a top runner who wanted to take on new challenges in life. Participating in sporting activities was a game-changer because it required discipline. This principle has stayed with me to this day, and I am glad that my experiences in Bikita shaped my understanding of mental wellness,” he noted.

Under his Musabvunda movement, Pasipanodya emphasised that he will continue to do his best through collaborations with other fitness clubs. “The movement encompasses a wide range of fitness-related events and initiatives, focusing not only on physical health but also on psychological and emotional well-being.”

Pasipanodya, who has excelled in his studies and runs one of the largest corporations, noted that he still has time to exercise and coach individuals. “There’s no excuse for me failing to fulfil this and other responsibilities because I have always exercised. It’s a lifestyle I can’t quit, and I will always do my best to ensure I change lives. I also believe in collaborating with other fitness clubs, which has made us stronger,” he asserted.

He added, “Looking ahead, I envision expanding the Musabvunda movement beyond Zimbabwe. This aspiration reflects a desire to share the principles of wellness and productivity on a larger scale. We believe a healthy nation is a productive nation. Our aim is to champion tailored programs and initiatives that uplift our communities and enhance lives. Fitness and wellness are crucial for human survival, and we are dedicated to collaborating with partners to drive impactful change.”

With exercising now a priority, fitness enthusiasts have numerous benefits. One of these is better sleep, which can be enhanced through physical activity. Regular exercise can help regulate sleep patterns, leading to improved sleep quality and overall mental health. This is what many people who don’t exercise have been missing for years.

Improved social interaction is another benefit.

For instance, group workouts or fitness classes provide opportunities for social interaction, fostering a sense of community and belonging. This is what Pasipanodya has been advocating for over the years.

For a man who rose from the tough conditions of Bikita to become a national asset in fitness and mental wellness, Pasipanodya deserves all the recognition while he is still alive.
