A ZVISHAVANE pastor has been sentenced to 18 years in prison after sexually assaulting an 18-year-old congregant during a visit to the victim’s home in Redcliff — a chilling reminder that not every “man of God” can be trusted.
Severino Mbwende (35) of New Creation Life Church, was found guilty by Kwekwe regional magistrate Ms Rumbidzai Mugwagwa of aggravated indecent assault. He had pleaded not guilty but was convicted after a full trial.
According to court records, Mbwende was visiting the teen’s family on August 10 when he shared a bed with the young congregant. Around 1.30AM, the victim reportedly woke up to find the pastor fondling him. When the teen resisted, Mbwende allegedly threatened to shoot him if he screamed.
Out of fear, the complainant complied and Mbwende went on to sexually assault him several times that night before warning him to keep silent.
The terrified teen later told his aunt, who helped him file a police report that led to the pastor’s arrest.
In sentencing, the magistrate said Mbwende had abused his spiritual authority to exploit a vulnerable young person, calling his actions “cruel and predatory.”
Police have since urged communities to be vigilant and report suspicious behaviour by anyone, including church leaders, who misuse positions of trust.
