Payments industry poised to chart Zimbabwe’s next digital payments chapter

Business Reporter

Zimbabwe’s digital payments ecosystem is at an inflection point. With over 238 million electronic transactions processed in the first quarter of 2026 alone, the industry is no longer simply building infrastructure it is now focused on delivering tangible economic impact. As Zimbabwe accelerates its digital transformation journey, digital payments are playing an increasingly pivotal role in driving economic growth, expanding financial inclusion, and enhancing service delivery. While the industry has made significant progress in building the foundations of a modern payments ecosystem, this is evidenced by the 238,3 million electronic transactions valued at ZiG612 billion recorded in the first quarter of 2026 alone and a massive expansion of Point-of-Sale (POS) infrastructure from approximately 40 000 to over 155 518 terminals between 2021 and first quarter 2026. The focus is now shifting towards accelerating adoption, strengthening collaboration, and delivering measurable impact. This is precisely the conversation that will unfold at the Zimswitch Payments Conference 2026, set to take place in Victoria Falls from 22-25 July 2026 under the theme “Scaling with Purpose, Delivering Impact.”

Taking place at a pivotal time for the country’s financial sector, the conference reflects Zimbabwe’s transition from building digital payment capabilities to maximizing their impact. The conference comes at a time when Zimbabwe’s financial sector is navigating significant developments, including the introduction of the Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG) currency and ongoing efforts to stabilize the economy while deepening digital financial services. As the country advances the objectives of the National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2), which sets an ambitious target of achieving over 90 percent financial inclusion by 2030, with digital payments seen as a primary driver to attract millions of unbanked citizens into the formal economy. Policy support, including the reduction of transactional charges and the promotion of fintech through regulatory sandboxes, is creating a favourable environment for this growth. The focus is shifting towards accelerating digital payment adoption, strengthening financial inclusion, modernizing payments infrastructure, and fostering greater collaboration across the ecosystem.

Speaking ahead of the conference, Zimswitch Chief Executive Officer Mr Zabron Chilakalaka noted that the industry is entering a new era where success will no longer be measured by the availability of digital payment solutions alone, but by their ability to improve lives, empower businesses, and drive economic transformation.

“Scaling with purpose means making deliberate investments that deliver meaningful outcomes. It is about ensuring that every innovation, partnership, and infrastructure investment translates into greater efficiency, wider financial inclusion, improved customer experiences, and sustainable growth for Zimbabwe’s digital economy,” said Mr Chilakalaka.

The conference will bring together policymakers, regulators, financial institutions, fintechs, merchants, technology providers, and other key stakeholders to deliberate on critical issues shaping the future of digital payments, including Artificial Intelligence, financial inclusion, infrastructure optimization, cybersecurity, digital trust, regulation, and innovation. The discussions will culminate in practical recommendations to strengthen Zimbabwe’s payments ecosystem and advance a secure, resilient, interoperable, and inclusive digital economy.

The Zimswitch Payments Conference continues to serve as Zimbabwe’s premier platform for thought leadership, collaboration, and innovation in digital payments, bringing together the industry’s leading voices to shape solutions that move the ecosystem from growth to lasting impact.

As Zimbabwe charts its next digital payments chapter, the conversations and commitments made at this year’s conference will be instrumental in shaping a future where digital payments are not just available, but truly transformative. The path from growth to lasting impact begins in Victoria Falls and all eyes will be on the outcomes that emerge.
