PRINCE Edward and Dominican Convent Harare were crowned the 2026 Lomagundi Invitational Chess tournament seniors’ champions at the weekend.
The Prince Edward team, led by Christian Nyatsombo, managed 10 points to win the open boys crown ahead of Riverdale from Bulawayo who amassed eight points. Kutama College were third with six points.
The senior girls’ category was won by Dominican Convent Harare who managed 10 points, with Ropafadzo Gwatidzo having an outstanding performance.
Chisipiti and Lomagundi were second and third respectively in the senior girls’ category.
Chisipiti, who had inform Munotida Mtandwa, finished on eight points and Lomagundi seven.
Convent Harare showed focus as they also won the juniors girls’ tournament by getting 10 points, beating Riverdale to second place.
The boys’ juniors category was won by Kutama College, who managed 10 points and were ahead of Christian Brothers College, who had eight points, and St Georges with seven points.
Lomagundi Invitational Chess tournament director, Maurice Mutowembwa, was happy with the response from schools.
“We are happy that the tournament has received an increased number of participants.
“This year we had 14 schools taking part, and it was a big increase compared to last year.
“We managed to get the support from several partners, and Pastor Kahoba was the chief arbiter,” said Mutowembwa.
