ALL is set for this year’s edition of the Zimbabwe Table Tennis Open competition set for the weekend at Harare’s Prince Edward High School.
The annual tournament provides local players with an opportunity to test their capabilities and skills against international opponents.
China, Botswana and Zambia are expected to send delegates to the tournament which starts on Saturday and ends on Sunday.
“Right now everything is on course and we are looking forward to having a great weekend. We have individuals from Botswana, Zambia and China who will be taking part in the competition and we are expecting a total of 160 participants at the tournament.
“Athletes from across the country’s tertiary institutions will form the bulk number of participants” said Newman Gomwendo, the Zimbabwe Table Tennis Union (ZTTU) technical director.
Gomwendo said they are also using the tournament to select the national team.
He said they expect stiff competition, with athletes who just graduated from junior ranks to the seniors expected to give experienced competitors a good run for their money.
Last year’s men and women’s champions Vikram Singh of Zimbabwe and China’s Zhang Yen will be hoping to defend their respective titles.
