Quest Boxing European light heavyweight champion, Mac Shumba Pemhiwa, has pledged to uplift Zimbabwe’s boxing through his Ultimate Knock-out organisation.
The organisation focuses on assisting amateur boxers turn professional.
“I aim to take boxing in Zimbabwe to its full potential through my Ultimate Knock-out organisation,” he said.
“We are looking to develop amateur boxers to turn professional, a transition that is vital for the boxers as it is the exact moment to master the use of mental, physical, strength and power among other key components of the sport.
“I believe that there will be more world champions in the future.”
The Zimbabwean-born boxer moved to Southend, England at the age of eight and became an influential citizen.
He is one of the co-founders of an anti-knife campaign called Younglivesmatter.
In the ring, he had over 34 fights and lost four.
Pemhiwa was crowned the European champion after defeating Albanian Eri Selgjekaj last Saturday and is now set to face British light heavyweight King Cornai Scott.
He said his last win was the most important win of his career as it made him the first from Quest Boxing League to be a European title holder.
“I’m currently the Quest Boxing League’s first European title holder. I went against a tough and experienced Albanian boxer who was unbeaten. He was the favourite to win this fight but I knocked him down in the first round and then finished him in the third round.
“My last win was probably the most important win of my career to date and securing the European title which had never been done in this boxing league,” he added.
He reflected on how he used boxing to stay out of trouble before he realised he could make a career out of it.
“I started boxing as a teenager as a way to stay out of trouble only to realise I was good and wanted to make a career out of it.
“Before the Covid-19 pandemic, I had turned professional but there weren’t any fights or boxing events. I had to sit down for three years but once everything went back to normal I could resume my career.
“I found myself at the Quest boxing league, the toughest and best circuit in the country.
He added; “The next step is a rematch with my rival Cornai Scott, whom I lost my British title to and then (after that) the sky is the limit, maybe some fights abroad,” he said.
