Penny Penny on successful tour

XITSONGA disco singer Penny Penny is back home from a tour in the US and Japan.
He left Mzansi in July to perform in New York, California and Las Vegas before ending his tour in Japan.Penny Penny, whose real name is Kulani Kobane, is also a ward 5 councillor in Giyani, Limpopo.

In June he visited Sydney in Australia with Xitsonga disco legend, Joe Shirimani, where they performed two live shows.

Penny Penny told Daily Sun: “We performed the first show indoors. Many people came to the show and they enjoyed our performance.

“They enjoyed songs such as Shaka Bundu, which was released in 1993, and Yogo Yogo.

“My songs stole the hearts of the Australians and I could hear them singing along to the tunes.”

Talking about his life before the music and fame, he said: “I was the last-born of 68 children from my father, a respected traditional healer who had 25 wives but died in 1966.

“After his death, the apartheid government forced our family and many others to leave the area. My siblings and I could not go to school because of that and my mum had to work on a farm to support the family.

“I also worked on the farm just to help my mum.”

The Bum-Bum hitmaker grew up dancing to muchongolo, xichayichayi and xigubu music.

He said that he was influenced by the late Michael Jackson and MC Hammer. – Daily Sun.
