The Harare City Council’s debt with the Local Authorities Pension Fund has ballooned to US$48 million and as a result the city’s pensioners have gone for months without getting their benefits.
As of March 31 this year, the City of Harare owed LAPF US$38,11 million, while Harare Water owed US$9,63 million.
Harare Municipality Workers’ Union chairman Mr Cosmas Bungu recently said as a result, LAPF had not been paying Harare City Council pensioners.
The city has also accumulated other statutory obligations debts with the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority, the National Social Security Authority, Zimbabwe Manpower Development Fund (training levies) and the Harare Municipal Medical Aid Society.
The city’s corporate communications manager, Mr Leslie Gwindi, said Harare had since made payment plans with the respective institutions.
