MARK Ngwazi, Theophilus Chigumira, Dorcas Moyo, Alick Macheso and Freeman have been named as the finalists for the People’s choice award under the National Arts Merit Awards (Nama).
The 21st edition of the awards is expected to roar into life this Saturday in Harare under the theme ‘Unlocking Dreams.’
The nominees for the awards were revealed in the first week of February with former radio personality Chief Koti, singer Gemma Griffiths and actress Charlene Mangweni- Furusa expected to host the auspicious event.
In a statement, the Nama board explained the process of coming up with the finalists where members of the public were given the chance to elect their choices through online voting.
“Members of the public were invited to vote for their favourite artist from any genre and background from the 10th to the 20th of February 2023. All practicing Zimbabwean artists were eligible for consideration including artists who were not nominated for a NAMA award.
“Votes were cast via the National Arts Merit Awards Facebook and Instagram pages as well as via WhatsApp and sms. Following the amalgamation of votes, the top five finalists were selected,” reads the statement.
Voting for the winner of People’s choice award has also been opened and will be closed on Saturday 25 February on the day of the Nama awards.
