Peter Muduhwa shines amid goal drought

THE 2023/24 football season burst into life several months ago, igniting the hopes and passions of fans across Zimbabwe. As the campaign unfolded, it became apparent that a goal drought had taken hold, affecting even the strikers from Zimbabwe’s prominent clubs, Dynamos and Highlanders. Frustration grew as misfires came from all angles, casting a shadow over the topflight football scene.

Amid this palpable concern that swept through the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League, there emerged a glimmer of positivity for some teams, particularly Highlanders. Despite their front men struggling to find the back of the net, the team could find solace in the reliable presence of Peter Muduhwa at the back. A stalwart defender, Muduhwa’s reassuring performances have showcased his immense value to the side.

During Highlanders’ recent clash against Simba Bhora at Barbourfields Stadium, Muduhwa marked a significant milestone, earning his 200th cap for the club across league and cup competitions. This remarkable feat demonstrated that the 29-year-old centre back is picking up where he left off last season, where he recorded the highest number of league appearances (33) and contributed to an impressive 15 clean sheets.

While goals may elude Bosso, who remain the only unbeaten team in the league this season, their vice-captain has stood tall at the heart of their defence, conceding a mere three goals in 12 matches. Muduhwa’s resolute presence is reminiscent of the world’s finest defenders, who, despite occasionally being labelled as undisciplined due to their fiery temperament on the field, are a nightmare for any opponent. Players such as Sergio Ramos, Roberto Carlos, and Giorgio Chiellini come to mind when discussing formidable defenders, and Muduhwa has undoubtedly earned his place among them in Zimbabwean football.

Muduhwa has made the art of defensive work appear effortless, expertly marshalling the Highlanders defence throughout the early stages of their campaign. Pieter de Jongh, the former Bosso manager, went as far as hailing him as the best centre back in the league. However, despite his impressive performances, Muduhwa finds himself hindered by circumstances beyond his control. The current ban on Zimbabwean football deprives him of opportunities to showcase his growing talent on an international stage. Competitions such as the Afcon or Cosafa tournaments, as well as the Caf Champions League and Confederations League, would have served as ideal platforms for the player to attract the attention of scouts seeking fresh talent. Compounding the situation, age seems to be working against the Bosso stalwart, further amplifying the urgency for him to make his mark.

Nevertheless, as the 2023/24 season unfolds, Muduhwa continues to demonstrate his brilliance and resilience on the football pitch. His unwavering commitment to his club and his unyielding defensive prowess make him a stand-out player in Zimbabwean football, leaving fans eagerly anticipating his future exploits, both domestically and, hopefully, on the international stage.
