The Pfumvudza/Intwasa programme has made remarkable strides in enhancing smallholder farmers’ maize yield in Mashonaland Central.
Maize yield per hectare has surged from 1,16 tonnes to 5,28 tonnes over the past year.
Mashonaland Central Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Christopher Magomo said Pfumvudza/Intwasa inputs have started arriving at various GMB depots in the province and expressed profound appreciation to President Mnangagwa for his steadfast support for the program.
Minister Magomo revealed that agriculture contributes 33 percent of Mashonaland Central’s Provincial Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and encouraged farmers to expedite the hole-digging process.
He warned farmers on the imminent threat of veld fires on winter wheat production and food security.
Minister Magomo encouraged farmers to swiftly implement adequate fire suppression measures, including constructing nine-meter-wide fireguards, and promoting hay baling to reduce burning fuel.
