IMAGINE harvesting more grain from the same piece of land every year without expanding your field or increasing production costs. This is the promise of the Pfumvudza/Intwasa conservation agriculture system.
Across Zimbabwe, farmers who consistently apply the principles of Pfumvudza/Intwasa are demonstrating that high agricultural productivity is not determined by the size of the land but by how well it is managed. Among these principles, one stands out as a cornerstone of long-term success: maintaining the same permanent planting plots year after year.
By preserving permanent planting basins, farmers steadily improve soil fertility, conserve precious moisture, increase the efficiency of inputs and create conditions for consistently higher yields, greater production and sustainable productivity. Each season builds upon the previous one, transforming the soil into a more fertile and resilient resource capable of producing abundant harvests even under increasingly variable climatic conditions.
One of the most important principles of the Pfumvudza/Intwasa conservation agriculture system is the maintenance of the same planting plots year after year. Rather than preparing new planting stations every season, farmers are encouraged to retain the same permanent planting basins in the same locations. This practice is fundamental to building healthy soils, conserving moisture, reducing labour requirements and achieving higher crop yields, increased agricultural production and sustainable productivity over the long term.
Maintaining permanent plots supports the principle of minimum soil disturbance, which is the cornerstone of conservation agriculture. By avoiding repeated ploughing and continually using the same planting basins, the natural structure of the soil is preserved.
Healthy soil structure promotes better root development, improves water infiltration, enhances soil aeration and provides a favourable environment for beneficial soil organisms such as earthworms and microorganisms. These organisms decompose organic matter, recycle nutrients, and improve soil fertility, creating conditions that support vigorous crop growth and consistently higher yields.
Permanent planting basins also serve as effective water-harvesting structures. Season after season, the basins capture rainfall and direct it into the crop root zone, reducing runoff and increasing soil moisture storage. This is particularly important in areas prone to mid-season dry spells and drought, where efficient water use can determine the success or failure of a crop. Improved soil moisture enables crops to withstand moisture stress, resulting in better establishment, stronger growth and improved grain filling.
Another major advantage of maintaining the same plots is the gradual improvement in soil fertility. Farmers repeatedly apply compost, manure and fertilisers directly into the permanent planting basins, concentrating nutrients exactly where crops need them. As organic matter accumulates over the years, soil fertility improves, nutrient-use efficiency increases and crop performance continues to improve. Rather than spreading scarce inputs across the entire field, targeted application ensures that every unit of fertiliser contributes directly to crop growth, reducing wastage while increasing returns on investment.
Maintaining permanent plots also significantly reduces labour requirements. Instead of digging new planting basins (potholing) every season, farmers only refurbish (holing-out) the existing ones by cleaning them and restoring their shape.
This reduces the time and energy required for land preparation, allowing farmers to complete field preparation well before the onset of the rains and plant immediately after receiving effective rainfall. Timely planting enables crops to make full use of the growing season and maximise their yield potential.
While the planting basins remain in the same locations, crop rotation remains essential. Farmers should rotate crops such as maize and legumes between seasons to break pest and disease cycles, improve soil fertility through biological nitrogen fixation and promote balanced nutrient use. Annual mulching should also be maintained by covering the soil with crop residues or other organic materials. Mulching conserves soil moisture, suppresses weeds, moderates soil temperature, reduces erosion and gradually enriches the soil as the organic material decomposes.
The cumulative benefits of maintaining permanent Pfumvudza/Intwasa plots become more evident with each passing season. Improved soil structure, increased organic matter, enhanced water retention, efficient nutrient use and timely crop establishment work together to increase crop yields per unit area. As yields increase, total farm production also rises, enabling farming households to produce more food from relatively small pieces of land. This increased production strengthens household food and nutrition security, creates marketable surpluses that improve household incomes and enhances resilience to climate variability.
Higher productivity means producing more output from the same land with the same or even fewer resources. Permanent plots improve the efficiency of labour, fertiliser, water and seed while lowering production costs. They therefore contribute not only to improved farm profitability but also to sustainable agricultural development, environmental conservation and national food security.
Maintaining the same Pfumvudza/Intwasa plots is therefore much more than a land preparation practice — it is a strategic investment in the future of farming. Every season that permanent planting stations are maintained strengthens soil health, improves water conservation, enhances nutrient availability and increases the potential for higher yields, greater production and sustained productivity. By faithfully maintaining permanent plots alongside minimum soil disturbance, mulching, crop rotation and precise input application, farmers build resilient farming systems capable of delivering abundant harvests and securing livelihoods for generations to come.
