A University of Zimbabwe (UZ) pharmaceutical student on attachment at Chitungwiza Central Hospital was on Friday convicted of stealing drugs worth $28 from a pharmacy at the institution.
Rumbidzai Mawadza (23) of Glen View 2, Harare, pleaded guilty to charges of theft of trust property.
Mawadza appeared before Chitungwiza magistrate Mr Lazarus Murendo, who warned, cautioned and discharged her.
Chitungwiza Central Hospital was being represented by Losylyriter Sapara of Unit H in the dormitory town.
Prosecutor Ms Ntombinkayise Nleya told the court that Sapara, who works in the pharmacy, was on duty on November 3.
Sapara was working with Mawadza.
The court heard that at around 1pm, Mawadza went into the pharmacy and emerged with a n assortment of tablets – Paracetamol, Amoxyline and Amlodipine.
Sapara asked Mawadza where she was taking the tablets to.
She asked Mawadza to hand over the prescription to check whether the drugs tallied with what was written down.
When asked to account for the extras, Mawadza failed to proffer a satisfactory explana- tion.
She proceeded to obtain a fake prescription from the casualty section and handed it over to Sapara.
But this did not exonerate her from the offence and the matter was reported to the police leading to her arrest.
