As A-level results draw near, emotions run high , excitement, anxiety, and hope all mixed into one.
But in the middle of all this, one of the most crucial decisions is often overlooked: Do you know what degree you want to pursue? Do you know which university is best suited for it?
Every year, many students fall into the trap of waiting for results first, and only then start to think about their next step.
This often leads to rushed decisions, confusion, and, in some cases, life-altering regret.
For example, students doing arts subjects tend to only consider law, as if it’s the only viable option. Yet universities in Zimbabwe and beyond offer a wide range of excellent degrees in Humanities, Social Sciences, Development Studies, Media, Education, Languages, and more.
The same applies to students who were doing Commercials and Sciences. This holiday is your opportunity to explore degree programs that align with your subjects and interests. Whether it’s Accounting, Marketing, Economics, Engineering, Environmental Science, Computer Science, Agriculture, or Health Sciences ,take time to visit university websites like Nust, UZ, MSU, Lupane, GZU, and others to understand the options available.
When results are out, you should already be sure of what to apply for, not copy your friends or panic and settle for anything available.
Many students also get caught up in the rush to study abroad, especially in countries like India, Cyprus, and Poland. While international exposure is valuable, it must be realistic and sustainable.
Pressuring your parents to send you abroad, when local universities offer solid programs, is not always wise.
Some parents even go as far as borrowing or selling assets just to meet these demands, forgetting they have other children who also deserve an education.
This is a time to be strategic and self-aware. Consider your family’s financial situation. Look for scholarships or affordable options. Your journey is your own, don’t let peer pressure dictate your future.
Make smart choices. Start planning now. Your future depends on the decisions you make today.
