THE Warriors camp is in open collapse as tensions with head coach Mario Marinica boil into a full blown revolt. Tawanda Chirewa and Tawanda Maswanhise walked out yesterday, a dramatic move that came less than a day after the bruising 3–1 loss to Algeria.
Their departure didn’t shock the squad. Players say the mood has been poisonous for days. Jordan Zemura and Marshall Munetsi had already stayed away before the Algeria match, and now several senior players are seriously considering leaving before Monday’s Qatar game.
Inside the camp, the atmosphere is described as combative and draining, with repeated clashes over Marinica’s leadership style.
“He treats adults like kindergarten kids,” an insider said. “The insults are constant, and they’ve escalated. The team is at breaking point.”
The examples are blunt.
“He told Maswanhise, ‘you are playing like a grandmother.’ He told Jalai he doesn’t even look like a player. There’s just no respect. None.”
The frustrations grew when Marinica sidelined Marvellous Nakamba and Divine Lunga despite both being key figures before his arrival. Players say the team has no direction, no trust and no belief in the coach’s helicopter style football, which fell apart on debut in Jeddah.
Before his first training session, Marinica took a hard line. “No one will give you a favour,” he said. “You have to deserve to be there.” He insisted the team had enough talent and demanded a more direct approach. “I was impressed by them, we have the quality. What I want is for them to be more direct.”
After the friendlies, he said he would open the door to local players for AFCON and claimed he had no hand in picking the current squad. That hasn’t convinced anyone inside the camp.
The Algeria defeat only deepened suspicions that Marinica’s fast and furious system is more slogan than strategy. The Warriors were run off the pitch long before halftime, the team scattered and unsure of what the coach wanted. Super Mario’s plan stalled in its first outing, forcing players to carry out instructions they neither trusted nor understood.
Now the Qatar match arrives with the team in disarray. With two players gone and others threatening to join them, the Warriors are falling apart from the inside. Unless something changes, the walkouts may only be the beginning.
