NHLANHLA Nyoni says playing the role of national hero, Dr Joshua Nkomo, has been a massive challenge.
But, he says he is happy with the work he has been doing. Nyoni, 21, is a member of the Joshua Nkomo Legacy Restoration Project Trust Youth Desk.
He said he was inspired by the life and struggles of Father Zimbabwe.
“I guess my body also matches how General Josh was built,” he said.
“I was inspired by the life and leadership of Joshua Nkomo, a man who dedicated his life to the liberation and unity of Zimbabwe.
“As a member of the Joshua Nkomo Legacy Restoration Project Trust Youth Desk, I felt a responsibility to help young people reconnect with his values of peace, courage, humility and love for the nation.”
He said portraying the late nationalist required deep study and understanding of his life and character. “I studied his biography, speeches, documentaries and historical records. I also listened to stories from elders who knew him personally.
“I observed his voice, posture and calm way of speaking. More importantly, I sought to understand his spirit of patience, wisdom and compassion.”
Nyoni admitted that portraying the image of such a respected figure comes with great responsibility.
“The greatest challenge is representing such a respected national figure with accuracy and dignity.
“There is also the challenge of addressing negative perceptions and misconceptions that some people still hold. “My goal is to present a balanced and truthful portrayal that honours his real contribution to Zimbabwe.”
He added: “People usually respond with deep emotion and respect. Older generations often become nostalgic and share memories of Father Zimbabwe. Younger audiences are inspired and curious to learn more about his life and his role in shaping our nation. I hope people take away the message that true leadership is rooted in sacrifice, unity, forgiveness and service to others.
“Joshua Nkomo showed that love for one’s country and its people is stronger than division and hatred.”
